Upgrade to a Smart ID Card before the time is due
Smart ID Card Revolution: Effortlessly Transform Your Identity from the Old Green Book
In an important move to enhance security and combat identity theft, South Africa’s Home Affairs Department is urging citizens to transition from the traditional green identity document (ID) book to the more secure smart ID card. Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber has stressed the urgency of this upgrade, highlighting that continuing to use the old green ID book could make individuals vulnerable to identity fraud. “Switch to a smart ID card before criminals steal your life,” Schreiber warned.
How to Upgrade to a Smart ID Card
If you’re concerned about the hassle of long queues at Home Affairs offices, there’s good news: you can now make the switch to a smart ID card at selected bank branches. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process with ease.
1. Booking Your Smart ID Appointment
Start the process online through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) eHomeAffairs platform. This system, designed to streamline the application process, allows you to book appointments at various bank branches across the country. Since its launch in 2016, the service has expanded to support applications at six different banks.
- Log in to the eHomeAffairs Portal: Sign in to your account on the eHomeAffairs portal.
- Create a New Application: Click on the “Create New Application” button. You’ll need to enter basic information, including your citizenship, birth town, residential and postal addresses, and select a bank branch for your biometrics capture. The system will pre-populate most of your details for a quicker process.
2. Choosing a Bank Branch
One of the key benefits of applying for your smart ID through a bank is convenience. With 30 bank branches nationwide participating, you can submit your biometrics and collect your documents with minimal hassle. However, note that you must be a customer of the bank where you book your appointment. This partnership between the DHA and major South African banks ensures a smoother and faster application process, helping you avoid the lengthy queues at Home Affairs offices.
3. Finalising Your Application and Payment
After filling out the application form, you’ll need to upload a copy of your green ID book. The next step involves payment. You can complete the payment through the eHomeAffairs portal by entering your banking details and finalising the transaction via Internet banking. You can book your appointment before making the payment, allowing you to choose a time slot that fits your schedule.
As the Home Affairs Department continues to address issues related to blocked IDs and combat fraudulent activities, transitioning to smart ID cards is a crucial step in protecting yourself from identity theft.
