DWP urge on boosting the Christmas Bonus for Benefit Claimants: A Call for Change

For over 50 years, the government’s Christmas bonus for benefit claimants has remained frozen at £10 – a figure that no longer reflects the challenges many face today. With the rising cost of living, energy price hikes, and a challenging winter ahead, thousands are urging the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to increase this “bonus” to better meet modern needs.

Currently, this tax-free £10 payment is made during the first week of December to those receiving specific benefits like Carer’s Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Pension Credit. However, those who claim Universal Credit as a standalone benefit are not eligible. This small bonus was introduced in 1972, and despite inflation and economic shifts, it has stayed the same ever since.

A Petition for Change

An online petition, first launched by Shona McMahon last year, has been gaining momentum, gathering more than 15,000 signatures. McMahon, and many others, are calling for the payment to be increased in line with inflation, which would see the bonus rise to £114.75, according to Bank of England data. The petition also asks for the bonus to be adjusted annually to keep up with rising costs. As McMahon puts it, “This isn’t asking for ‘just another handout.’ This is for those of us that don’t have an option to earn anything extra.”

The call for an uprating has resonated more this year as the country faces the prospect of rising energy bills. Ofgem’s price cap is set to increase again this winter, and with Labour’s controversial cut to the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners, many are concerned about how vulnerable people will cope.

A Difficult Winter Ahead

Consumer advocate Martin Lewis has added his voice to those urging the government to rethink its approach to cold weather support. He warns that with the withdrawal of the £300 cost-of-living support and changes to winter fuel payment eligibility, some households could be up to £600 worse off this winter compared to last year.

Even though benefits are set to increase in April 2024 in line with inflation, for many, the coming months feel especially uncertain. Last year’s benefit increase of 6.7% was a welcome adjustment, but it may not be enough for the most vulnerable members of society as they face new financial pressures.

What Needs to Happen Next?

The petition highlights a real need for the government to reassess how it supports benefit claimants, especially during the holiday season. A Christmas bonus that reflects the realities of today’s economy would offer some relief for people already struggling to make ends meet.

As energy prices rise and other forms of financial support are cut back, increasing this small but symbolic payment could help those who rely on these benefits feel less invisible. It’s not about asking for handouts, but about ensuring dignity and respect for those who need it most.

Whether or not the DWP responds to this growing call for change, the conversation is one we should all be paying attention to this winter.
