Proteas vs Afghanistan. 5 Crucial Areas the Proteas (South Africa) Must Improve in the Second ODI Against Afghanistan

Following a crushing six-wicket loss in the first ODI against Afghanistan in Sharjah, the Proteas find themselves in desperate need of a bounce back. The second match, scheduled for Friday at the same venue, presents South Africa with a chance to restore some pride and level the three-match series. After being bundled out for just 107, there’s no doubt they’ll need a far better performance to avoid losing the series.

Here are five key areas the Proteas must improve to get back on track:

1. Experienced Batsmen Must Step Up

One of the most glaring issues in the first ODI was the collapse of South Africa’s batting lineup. After being reduced to 35/7, they never recovered. Reeza Hendricks and Tony de Zorzi made a positive start, reaching 17/0 before a poor shot selection from Hendricks triggered the downfall.

Experienced players like Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks, who together have 104 ODI appearances, must lead the charge of the second ODI. Their presence and performance at the top of the order will be crucial in guiding a relatively inexperienced lineup that struggled badly in the first game.

2. Temba Bavuma’s Influence is Vital

Temba Bavuma was ruled out of the first ODI due to illness, but if fit for the second match, his return could provide the stability the team sorely lacked. As the regular captain, Bavuma’s leadership and calm presence will be needed to settle a Proteas side that looked lost under pressure in the series opener.

His ability to build an innings will also be crucial. Bavuma needs to anchor the batting, staying at the crease for as long as possible to give South Africa a fighting chance, whether they’re setting a target or chasing one.

3. Better Decision at the Toss

While nothing can be done about losing the toss, if the Proteas do win it, they’ll need to be smarter about their choice. On a Sharjah pitch that proved difficult for the team in the first match, choosing to bat first was a mistake. Should similar conditions arise on Friday, bowling first and allowing their bowlers to make early inroads could be the better option.

4. Make the Batsmen Give the Bowlers a Fighting Chance

If South Africa finds themselves batting first again, the batsmen must dig in and produce a total that gives the bowlers something to defend. Posting anything close to their dismal 107 from the first game will all but guarantee defeat. The Proteas’ attack, led by Lungi Ngidi, can only be effective if they have a reasonable target to work with.

Ngidi, in the absence of Kagiso Rabada, is expected to lead the bowling, but without runs on the board, even he will struggle to turn the game in South Africa’s favor. Batting discipline will be key to giving the bowlers a shot at leveling the series.

5. Discipline Across the Batting Order

As seen in the first ODI, a lack of discipline with the bat caused unnecessary wickets to fall at crucial stages. South Africa cannot afford to gift their wickets cheaply, especially early on. The batsmen need to assess the conditions better and play with more patience. Rash shots and poor decision-making must be eliminated if the Proteas hope to put up a competitive total.
