The search for missing US hiker Brook Cheuvront ended tragically when her body was discovered on Devil’s Peak in Cape Town on Sunday afternoon. The 20-year-old hiker from North Carolina had been missing since noon on Saturday, sparking an extensive search and rescue operation.
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, Cheuvront’s body was located by a search party at approximately 14:00 in an area of Devil’s Peak. Emergency medical services retrieved her body via helicopter.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, and an inquest docket has been opened to investigate further. Authorities have confirmed that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The tragic news was shared by Brook’s father, Steve Cheuvront, who expressed his devastation on social media, writing, “Please take down all posts looking for Brook. She was recovered. We are devastated.”
Steve had previously shared his plans to fly in South Africa to assist in the search efforts, working alongside local authorities and rescue teams. The US Ambassador had also been made aware of the situation as the rescue operation intensified.
