SA Zionist Federation Voices Concerns Over Proposal to Rename Sandton Drive in Honor of Palestinian Activist Leila Khaled
The South African Zionist Federation (SA Zionist) has voiced strong opposition to the City of Johannesburg’s recent proposal to rename Sandton Drive after Palestinian activist and freedom fighter Leila Khaled. The city announced on Monday that it is considering renaming the road “Leila Khaled Drive” to honor her efforts in fighting against the oppression of the Palestinian people.
The public has been given until 18 October to provide comments on the proposal, which will then be reviewed by the council for final approval or rejection. The proposal has already received backing from political parties such as the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The South African Zionist Federation is the latest organization to reject the idea. Federation spokesperson Rolene Marks criticized the move, asserting that it violates the city’s own legislation regarding street renaming. “It is also potentially burdensome for businesses, with address changes, and undermines confidence in the city,” said Marks.
The City of Joburg’s renaming policy states that naming streets or public places after living individuals should be avoided to prevent future shifts in public opinion regarding the figure in question. Leila Khaled is a controversial figure due to her role in Palestinian resistance, and the proposal has sparked significant debate among various community groups.
As the deadline for public comments approaches, the issue remains contentious, with strong opinions from both supporters and opponents of the renaming.
