Qatar Airways Expands African Footprint
Qatar Airways Makes Bold Move with Strategic Acquisition of 25% Stake in Airlink to Transform African Aviation
In a bold move to reinforce its position in Africa, Qatar Airways Group has announced the acquisition of a 25% stake in Airlink, a leading regional carrier in Southern Africa. This significant investment, unveiled on August 20, 2024, marks a pivotal step in Qatar Airways’ ongoing strategy to enhance its presence across the African continent and extend its global network.
Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Airlink, founded in 1992, operates a comprehensive network serving over 45 destinations across 15 African countries. With a fleet of more than 65 aircraft, the airline connects major cities throughout Southern Africa, as well as key locations in Madagascar and St Helena Island. The partnership with Qatar Airways is set to further strengthen Airlink’s extensive network and boost its operational capacity.
Rodger Foster, Chief Executive of Airlink, expressed the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Having Qatar Airways as an equity partner is a powerful endorsement of Airlink and echoes our faith in the markets we currently serve and plan to add to our network.” This strategic alliance will also enhance the benefits for travelers by aligning Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club with Airlink’s Skybucks loyalty programs, offering a seamless and enriched travel experience.
A Strategic Growth Initiative
Qatar Airways, already serving 29 destinations across Africa, has been aggressively pursuing growth on the continent. Since 2019, the airline has expanded its African network with new routes to Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Harare, Kano, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt, and resumed services to Cairo and Alexandria. This latest investment aligns with Qatar Airways’ broader strategy to leverage Africa’s growth potential and enhance its connectivity.
The acquisition of a stake in Airlink follows Qatar Airways’ previous strategic investments in Africa, including a 60% stake in the development of a multi-billion-dollar international airport near Kigali, Rwanda, announced in 2019.
Expanding Global Reach
In addition to its African expansion, Qatar Airways continues to bolster its global network. Starting October 27, the airline will increase its flight frequencies to London, adding an eighth daily flight, bringing the total to 56 weekly flights. Furthermore, Qatar Airways will enhance services to popular destinations such as Male (Maldives), Miami (US), and Tokyo (Japan) during the 2024-2025 winter season.
This latest move underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to strengthening its global network and capitalizing on the growing opportunities in the African aviation market. As Qatar Airways and Airlink work together, travelers can look forward to even greater connectivity and a broader range of options across both regional and international routes.
