On Thursday morning, a magnitude-4.7 struck north of Malibu, affecting a broad area of Southern California from the coast to inland communities. Originally recorded as a magnitude-5.1, the quake’s strength was later revised to 4.7. The earthquake, occurring at 7:28 a.m. and at a depth of about seven miles, prompted over two dozen aftershocks, including two with a magnitude of 3.4.
Although the shaking was felt across Malibu, Hermosa Beach, La Mirada, Anaheim, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Hills, and parts of the San Fernando Valley, there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage. In response, the Los Angeles Metro system will slow down trains to inspect for damage, a standard precaution following such events. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones noted that while recent earthquakes have been relatively minor, this serves as a reminder that Southern California’s seismic activity is ongoing.
