Adelaide ruckman Reilly O’Brien has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Jim Stynes Award for his outstanding advocacy work in mental health, particularly among South Australian school students. As a lead facilitator and ambassador for the Open Parachute Mental Health Program since its inception in 2022, O’Brien has played a crucial role in reaching over 28,000 students across the state.
His commitment to mental health awareness is deeply personal; O’Brien has openly shared his own struggles, creating a safe space for young people to engage in vital conversations about mental well-being. His efforts have not only impacted students but have also encouraged his young Adelaide teammates to participate in the program, fostering a culture of openness and support.
This year, O’Brien was one of five finalists for the award, alongside notable players such as Fremantle’s Bailey Banfield and Sydney’s Harry Cunningham, all recognized for their contributions to community and charity work. Crows CEO Tim Silvers expressed immense pride in O’Brien’s achievements, highlighting his genuine care for others as a core value of the club.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon commended O’Brien for his deserving recognition, emphasizing the importance of early education in mental health. With the award comes a $40,000 donation to a charity of O’Brien’s choice, further extending his positive impact on the community.
