Now Trending | Moo Deng The Adorable Baby Hippo in Thailand

Thailand has a new superstar, and she’s making quite the splash – meet Moo Deng, the adorable two-month-old pygmy hippo who’s captured the hearts of thousands both online and in person. Born in July at Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya, Moo Deng’s cute, podgy appearance and miniature frame have turned her into a viral sensation, with the zoo’s visitor numbers doubling since her birth.

Moo Deng’s name, which roughly translates to “bouncy pig,” couldn’t be more fitting for the playful little hippo. But as her fame grows, so do concerns about her well-being. Videos have surfaced showing some visitors acting irresponsibly, throwing shellfish and even splashing water at Moo Deng in hopes of waking her up for a better view. These incidents have prompted the zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoi, to issue a stern warning.

“These behaviours are not only cruel but also dangerous,” Mr. Narongwit said in a statement. “We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment.” The zoo has since installed CCTV cameras around Moo Deng’s enclosure and is prepared to take legal action against those mistreating the baby hippo.

An Internet Sensation

Moo Deng’s online popularity has skyrocketed, with fans from across the globe obsessing over her. “I’m obsessed with Moo Deng – I’ve been thinking about this queen all day long,” gushed one user on X (formerly Twitter). Another fan admitted: “I don’t know anything else going on in the world right now except for Moo Deng.”

The zoo has certainly embraced her star status. Of its last 150 social media posts, 128 have been dedicated to the tiny hippo, and they’ve even released a range of Moo Deng-inspired merchandise. From hippo-themed clothing to plush toys, visitors can take a piece of Moo Deng home with them. And it’s not just the zoo getting in on the action – beauty retailer Sephora recently launched a line of Moo Deng-inspired blushes, so fans can “wear your blush like a baby hippo.”

A Global Star

Moo Deng’s charm has transcended borders, recently making her international TV debut on Japan’s All-Nippon News Network. Even the Royal Thai Embassy has joined in the fun, posting about the “hot topic” baby hippo on its social media channels. “She’s very energetic, and her cute appearance is soothing,” the embassy said.

But while Moo Deng is basking in the glow of her newfound fame, it’s important to remember that pygmy hippos, also known as dwarf hippos, are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). With fewer than 3,000 left in the wild, every one of these gentle creatures is precious.

As adorable as she is, Moo Deng is still a wild animal, and it’s crucial that her fans respect her space and well-being. The zoo urges visitors to come at the right time – when Moo Deng is awake and ready to greet her admirers – to ensure she remains safe, happy, and healthy.

So, if you’re planning a visit to see Thailand’s tiniest superstar, be sure to do it responsibly. After all, Moo Deng may be famous, but she still deserves the quiet and care that every endangered animal needs to thrive.
