Scabies Cases Rise in England as GPs Urge People Not to Ignore Condition Due to ‘Social Stigma’

With scabies cases rising across England, doctors urge patients not to ignore symptoms due to social stigma. Learn about symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

Scabies cases are on the rise across England, with new data showing a significant increase in diagnoses. In the year leading up to April, 3,689 cases of the contagious skin infestation were recorded in hospitals—up from 2,128 in the previous year, according to the NHS. Doctors and healthcare professionals are urging people not to ignore symptoms of scabies due to perceived social stigma, warning that untreated cases could lead to secondary infections and worsening skin conditions.

Understanding Scabies: Symptoms and Spread

Scabies is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, causing intense itching and a rash, typically more noticeable at night. The rash may appear anywhere on the body, commonly between fingers, and can spread if left untreated. The infection spreads quickly through close physical contact, shared bedding, and clothing, making it particularly concerning in environments where people live in close quarters, such as care homes and universities.

Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, emphasized that while scabies cases remain relatively rare, the numbers are rising above the five-year average, especially in the North of England. She also highlighted that despite the stigma, scabies is not a “serious” condition but could lead to complications if neglected.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment is available over the counter with creams or lotions, such as permethrin cream and malathion lotion, which should be applied across the entire body. While scabies is highly contagious, it can take up to eight weeks for symptoms to appear, meaning early detection is essential. Professor Hawthorne and the NHS encourage those experiencing symptoms to seek prompt treatment and avoid delayed care due to social concerns.

As scabies cases rise, staying informed and proactive about this common skin condition can help reduce further spread and discomfort.
