Thabo Bester, infamously known as the “Facebook Rapist,” returned to court in September 2024 to request access to a laptop while in prison. He claims it is essential for preparing his defense for a trial set for February 2025. Bester, who escaped from Mangaung Prison in 2022 using a laptop, faces opposition from the Department of Correctional Services. They argue that granting him access to technology poses a security risk, given his history of using it to orchestrate his escape and fraudulent activities.
Bester insists that denying him the laptop violates his right to a fair trial, as it hampers his ability to review legal documents and evidence. The department, however, remains firm in its decision, fearing another possible escape or criminal manipulation.
